I hope this weekend finds you all cozy in your home relaxing. I'm watching the snow fall out my window as I type this.
Often times my clients just need help pulling a room together with art, accessories and small furniture. That was the case with this client in Seattle, Wa. They had a sectional, end tables and pillow that worked. It was just time to update and add a new chair, art, rug, lamp and accessories. The client emailed me her thoughts and current photos of the room. I then sent back a custom flat rate design quote. Within a few days I sent them a detailed shopping list and vision board. With a few design selection this room will have a major update.
Tell me about your project. I would love to help you create an entire home design or even just select a few pillows. Let's start your custom Decorator in a Box today. Start here and follow the easy steps.
This beach house in West Hampton has been such a fun and on going project. I have been creating room designs for this house over the past few years. It's been wonderful to watch the transformation. Here is a look at the latest Guest Bathroom update. My favorite feature is the white paneled wall detail that was added. This really gives the bathroom that Hamptons feel. Then I finished off the design with all the quintessential beach accessories and art. The guests are sure to have a hard time leaving this beach getaway.

It's looking like Halloween around here. I sent my first grader off to school this morning as a chocolate chip cookie. Her two year old sister will join her as the ever so important milk bottle for trick or treating. Together they are a very frightening milk and cookie. I can't take costume idea credit it was all my first graders idea. Then their talented Nana stepped up to sew the costumes.
We had so much fun this year carving pumpkins. We grabbed the Trader Joe's chocolate haunted candy house to make for the second year in a row. That's becoming a fun tradition. After carving pumpkins I don't usually roast the seeds. I haven't had much luck with them in the past. This year with an accumulation of neighbor and friend recipe tips I think we found a good method. See the recipe details below. Have a safe, fun and spooky Halloween!
Pumpkin Seed Roasting Recipe
- Pumpkin seeds
- Lawry's Seasoned Salt
- Olive Oil or Butter
- Preheat oven 400F.
- Wash pumpkin of of the seeds.
- Boil the pumpkin seed in salt water for 10 mins.
- Remove from water and pat dry with a paper towel.
- Toss them in a bowl with butter or olive oil and Lawry's Seasoned Salt to your taste and amount of seeds.
- Spread the seeds on a baking sheet and bake for 5-20 mins. Watch them closely they can burn quickly.
- Remove and place in a bowl to pop like popcorn.

rI'm always drawn to Scandinavian interior design and philosophy. Due to my Swedish roots and living in Minnesota things get pretty Nordic around here. I love the Scandinavian Hygge philosophy to create a home that puts you in a mood of cozy, comfort, wellness and contentment. One of my favorite ways to do this is with a cozy corner near a window with lots textured pillows and blankets. Placing a glowing lamp light and candle on a side table finishes off this look. Just a place to sit and watch the snow fall with a cup of tea, warm slippers and a book. My favorite blog to gather inspiration to put me in the Hygge frame of mind is My Scandinavian Home. Just one visit to this blog will have you feeling oh so cozy.

I'm in the mood for sharing. Although all the Decorator in a Box designs are completely custom to each client I have a few tried and true pieces. One of the accent pieces I find myself going back to is this little teakwood side table. It's available at most affordable online furniture stores like Houzz, Overstock and Wayfair. What I like is that it's a very versatile and affordable piece. It brings in a little nature. It can be used in many coastal style homes. Yet I can also use it in a cabin design or even in a child's woodland inspired bedroom. Often times I place it between two chairs as an accent piece. There you have it I have spilled the beans and gave you one of my design secrets.
Would you like more design secrets? Did you know Decorator in a Box will make selections at your favorite and affordable stores? There is no pressure or extra fee to order from specific stores. I have been going over design ideas in my head for my own personal kitchen remodel . I always go back to the classic white cabinets and subway tile look. It's timeless and clean. Yet I worry about my home being too cookie cutter. I also worry about not being fearless enough with my style. This kitchen inspiration image below is the perfect example of how accessories, lighting and textiles make all the difference. They make the space your own and bring in the homey vibe. The cabinets, tile and countertops serve as a backdrop. Maybe I'll be fearless with some open shelves. I know I can hide away a sippy cup or two.

Halloween should be fun and not all stressy. Fun to me are decor ideas that don't cost too much or take too much time. It's also a plus if kids or friends can get involved. Here are three ideas to get you Halloweenafide in style.
#1 Painted Typography Pumpkins
Break out the paint and get some black sticker letters from the craft store. Have fun coming up with Halloween puns to stick on your painted pumpkins. photo and idea via Decoist
#2 Branches, Birds & Webs
I love a project that involves gathering items from nature or your backyard. Collect branches from the yard or a nature hike. These can be placed at the fireplace mantel, front porch or corners of the room. Then fill them with black birds from the craft store and add spider webs. If your feeling extra crafty you can spray paint the branches black. image via Emily Henderson
#3 Felt Bats
This idea can be done inside and outside the home. Trace and cut bats out of felt and attach with a strong mounting adhesive tape. This image is via Design Sponge where you can also find the full how-to tutorial.

Did you know Decorator in a Box can give you a consult with ideas you already have? Sometimes my clients have great ideas they just need to get my design take on them before moving forward. That was the case with this client in Bloomington, Minnesota. This retired couple was downsizing. They purchased a town home investment property that just needed the cosmetic update. The client began by bouncing her thoughts and ideas off of me. I gave her my opinions and this gave her the confidence to move forward on her decisions. An important factor in this design was the great room. After a consult she decided to utilize the Decorator in a Box online service for a full room design in the great room. With both the consult and full room design this client can take some of those tough decisions off her plate. More importantly it will eliminate some costly mistakes.
