I have seen so many fun under the stairs kid spaces on Pinterest over the years. This is why I was so excited to create my first play space under the stairs for this family in Minnesota. This particular design was for two girls. In Minnesota everyone has a basement in their home. Most people have a closet under the stairs. They often times are used for storage. In fact mine is filled with Christmas decorations and suitcases at the moment. This family was not in need of additional storage. The mission for their basement living areas was to eliminate the entire space being taken over by childrens toys and games. By creating a kids area under the stairs the main living area could be designed more sophisticated for grown ups. Here is a glimpse at the vision board. The detailed shopping list is saved for the client. I told this client if this were my house I would use this as a Mommy needs time alone lounge as well. Isn't it great when you can get more than one use out of a space? Tell me about your home project. You know.... the one you have been meaning to get to for so long. Well it's only been about 4 month and I'm finally getting around to part 2 of this blog post. Better late than never right? I think the timing is perfect howevever because now it's patio season for most of us. Here in Minnesota it's going to be 70 degrees this weekend. Which means we will all blind eachother with our white legs being revealed in shorts. I will be setting up my patio furniture forsure. Plus start looking forward to doing some planting soon.
I had so much fun working on this guest house in Scottsdale, Arizona. You can look back on part one of this design in my previous blog post. Just steps out the patio door of this home is the pool. The mission for this design was to create modern outdoor living and comfort. Making the outdoor living space an extension of the main home and guest house was key. Especially in Scottsdale where they get to use their pools year round. Here is a sneak peek at the Decorator in a Box Vision Boards and Furniture Plan below. Tell me about your home project. Xo, Annie Winter is still very present out my window. Sitting at a poolside guest house in Scottsdale, AZ sounds pretty good right now. I had such a pleasure creating a Decorator in a Box for this newly remodeled guest house in Scottsdale. The guest home sits poolside and ready for the ultimate entertaining. The mission for this space was to create a look and function that had comfort and a touch of golf club style. The four TV screens on the wall and full size kitchen are Super Bowl and Masters ready. The color scheme was inspired by the clients existing aviator chairs. Which also pull in the warm canyon rust tones of Arizona. Here is a little sneak peek. I hope to show you photos once this project is complete very soon.

New York City knows about this adjustment very well. That was the case with this family I have worked with over the years. I have designed two apartments for them. I have also revisited this shared child's bedroom a few times before. As the kids grow and needs change so must the design function. As you know New Yorkers need to make the most of their small spaces and have smart storage solutions. With the two kids now home doing e-learning they needed a bedroom that would meet those new needs. By eliminating the wide bookcase I was able to incorporarte a workspace for each child. I added two new dressers and bookcase storage with this solution. I was also able to create a reading window seat with additional storage for toys. Now this space has multiple functions. It really makes the most of this unique situation many are faced with today. It's amazing what the right design can do to make life a little easier when new challenges arise. This is the third home I have worked on with this family. They are so fun because they are not afraid of a little DIY project or two. When I met with them they had a great vision already for the space. They shared their Pinterest inspiration boards and decisions that had already been made. It was important to work with pieces of furniture they had while mixing in some new pieces. By working together with their vision and mine we created a space that can truly be a forever home. One of my favorite new pieces in our home is this modular sofa table. It's a focal point in the room. Therefore, it had to get the holiday treatment. Here is what I did in four easy steps. 1. I swapped out our regular books with our holiday book collection. I made sure the beautiful cover of the Polar Express was on display. This is my favorite book since it was mine as a kid. 2. I mixed in pinecones (Target), snow globe (Target), felt trees (Target $3 section) and old nutcrackers (Dollar Store) to add holiday charm. 3. I switched out the Bob Dylan album for a more festive Bing Crosby. 4. Finally I finished off the look with tea lights in votives. Both the votives and the tea lights are from Target. Now this sofa table has all the Holiday style we need. Turn on the Bing Crosby and pour the eggnog! Tell me about your home project. I get to transition their space in different phases of life. That has definitely been the case with this family in lovely Palos Verdes, California. When I started working with them they had two boys. Then little sister came along and I got to create a room for the boys to share. This made room for baby sisters nursery. Now little sis is ready for her big girl bed. The mission in this space was to create room for the new bed and use most of what was already in the space. It also needed to take her into the young teen years. I love how it came together.
